When a person leaves this world, he or she leaves a hole in the heart of those who have lost them. The way they lived on Earth can leave a negative impact on those who knew them. They may have been a kind person, a thoughtful friend or a loving parent, but they may have also hurt others in some way. Whenever we hurt people, we hurt ourselves as well.

For example, if we lose someone we love to an untimely death and make the mistake of grieving alone for them, we will not only feel the pain of their loss but our own as well. When we experience such pain and our own emotional pain, we try to block it out by taking drugs or alcohol or by spending time with people whose company can ease our pain and numb our emotions. Unfortunately, this does nothing but intensify the emotional pain and make us feel even more empty inside than we already did.
